February blog

Jan 31, 2020

Dear grade 3B and C Families,

Dear Parent / Guardian
Mr. O’Reilly will be on a leave for the month of February 2020.
To ensure continuity Ms. Latham will be redeployed from her
role as PE Specialist to work with Ms. Ley in the grade three
classroom.  Ms. Latham has experience both with the grade
three curriculum and well established relationships with all
of our students at SVS. PE will be taught by home room teachers
or a designated grade team member for the month of February 2020.
Mr. O’Reilly will be returning on March 2, 2020. If you have any
questions or concerns please contact administration through
the front office at 403-777-6660.
Respectfully:
Christopher Snow
Principal, SVS

PLEASE CHECK IRIS LEY'S BLOGS FOR FEBRUARY TO STAY
INFORMED ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR CLASS (3B/3C)
AND CONTACT HER IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT
THE BLOG OR OUR CLASS.

The next Parent Council meeting is next week on
Thursday, February 6th at 7 pm in our DLC.
We are holding the meeting a week early to
accommodate the Teachers' Convention break.
It’s our Grade 2 teaching teams' turn to present
what your kids have been working on in their classrooms.
There will also be the usual updates from our
Admin team and other committees.
Babysitting will be available.
And in case you missed this on our school website,

We are excited to go skating! We are going to the rink
between the two schools. We do need parents to help
us get ready to skate. Thanks volunteers!

Skating dates this year are Mon Feb 10-Wed Feb 12.
Our two classes will get two skating blocks. One on
Monday February 10 at 11am at the rink to tie skates
etc... and Wednesday February 12 at 11:35. We need
parents who are available to volunteer either of those
days to help tie up skates and put on helmets. Volunteers
will not be expected to go on the ice (unless they want to!).

We will be creating Valentines hearts in class for every
child to decorate, have it signed by their peers, and take
home on February 12.

On Wednesday February 5th, we say so long to our
wonderful student teacher Mrs. Maya H. She has
been a kind and caring addition to our class and we
wish her success.

We will be partaking in Yoga once a month for a half
hour per class as a school wide wellness activity. If
you have any questions please contact the admin at
the school.
                                                                                                Student Fundraiser:
Hello grade 3 Families,

Your kid is probably asking for some money ($1.00 or $0.50).
We are raising money for the animals in Australia because there's
a big wildfire you might know about this, so we are trying to raise
money to stop this wildfire by doing a jelly bean contest. Kids can
take one guess for $0.50 or two guesses for $1.00 maximum.
The winner will get the jelly beans and the money will go to the
replanting of trees and helping koala and all the other animals.
We will send a cheque to WWF ( world wildlife fund) to support
Australia.

Thank you for supporting this fundraiser!

Dear 3C Families,

We had another great week in 3B/C...We finished our unit on mental
math with a test yesterday. We started our unit on multiplication today!!
In Science we continued on with hearing and sound and continued on
with editing in Daily 5.  We started our google slides for Ukraine and
made a plan for our instruments that we’ll be building.  Please ask your
child if the need any supplies for their instrument and send them in, if
you haven’t already done so.  We looked at the buffalo teachings and
respecting differences in Health and had our first CAD today!!

Message: Sandstone MacEwan Community Association has been
collecting used skates for kids in the community who cannot afford
to skate. If you are a family who would like to receive or who would
like to donate skates, please contact info@sandstomemacewan.com.
As well, if you are interested, there is a family willing to do some
sharpening and some intro lessons! What a great opportunity!

We started looking at the Ukraine in Social and talked about friendship in Health.  Our Peruvian masks and sound wave art look great on our display boards.

Jan 10

Dear Grade 3C Families,

Happy New Year !
Hope you all had a wonderful winter break!

We would like to introduce our student teacher Mrs. Maya H.
from Ambrose University. Maya will be with us for 5 weeks to learn,
 plan, and teach.

We will be busy creating instruments from Peru and the Ukraine.
Please continue to send in materials such as raw rice, wooden
spoons or sticks, paper towel rolls, etc…

Our Peruvian masks are lovely. Some depict the different regions of
Peru along with the flora and fauna. Mrs. Maya H, our student
teacher, is leading this project with the class.

Our  grade 6 buddies helped us create sound wave art on the
computers. We are learning about how sound is made, so we
had fun recording our names!

Here are some pictures:

We are beginning to read the novel Frindle, by Andrew Clements.

Scholastic orders were sent home, please order online if you wish to
order books by January 21st.

A note from SVS:
We are excited to bring back two programs, Simons Valley
Reads and Simons Valley Mathletes. Both programs were a HUGE
success because of volunteers such as you! We are hoping to
run an 8 week program of both SVS Reads and Mathletes starting
January 28th for 1 hour a week.

Here is a brief description of the two programs
(little different from last year) but just as impactful!
SVS Reads to support our Grade One/ Two/ Three students,
we are looking for parent volunteers who would be able to come
once a week for an hour and work with two students. Volunteers
would work with a student for 20 minutes each practicing high
frequency words, sentence work and of course, reading a short story.
All of the materials will be provided for you!SVS Mathletes
The second program, Simons Valley Mathletes is a program
designed to help our grade 3 to 6 students develop proficiency
in mathematics. The focus this year will be to strengthen
basic math facts. With this program, as SVS Reads, we are looking
for parent volunteers who would be able to come once a
week for an hour and work with two students.
Volunteers would work with each student for 20 minutes
making numbers, practicing basic math facts and then playing a
math game. All of the materials will be provided for you.

If you are interested in volunteering with either program, please
contact us at ggdavidoff@cbe.ab.ca
or bghordern@cbe.ab.ca before January 14th.

Dates:

Jan 15- Crime not to Read at 9:30am
Jan 16- Hot Lunch Little Caesars
January 21st Scholastic orders due
Jan 24- CAD day
Jan 31st- Non Instructional Day
Feb 28- Grade 3 Assembly in the gym. Please come and
