Dear grade 3C Families,

Science- Our communities are being built, and the children
are having so much fun! Thank you for the materials brought
to class, it sure gave the children options for building.

In Social- We will be learning about the Ukraine, India, Peru,
and Tunisia. This will be exciting as the children learn
about culture, languages spoken, foods, instruments,
celebrations, and how important we all our in this world.
Our circle project is complete in our visual journals.

In Health -We have been discussing friendship and no
tolerance for bullying during circle talk times. We learn through
Indigenous stories and legends to
take care of myself, others, and our place.
This is our 3 Pillar learning.

Ryan Willert has been working at our school painting a mural in
our Gathering Space.  The following link is a quick video of his
artistic process. https://youtu.be/MF9vXDn_MDk
We are only half way done and we are really looking forward to
unveiling the whole mural at the end of November.
Ryan has also been teaching students about
the 4 teachings of the buffalo;
1.Take Responsibility
2.Say Sorry
3.Forgive yourself
4.Forgive others

Thank you for packing a bag so that your child can pack garbage,

A fun week!

Oct. 25/19

Dear Grade 3C Families,

We continue to work on our community planning and building
in our teams, please remember to send in building supplies for
next weeks build.

Our descriptive “Haunted house for sale” writing has been a positive
process as we focused on nouns and adjectives in our writing.
Children learned how to persuade a reader into purchasing their haunted house.
They are great agents!

In Math, we continue to work on place value of numbers to 999 as well
as recognizing the numbers in words, and comparing numbers.
The children took part in Ready Squad for the city of Calgary and learned
how to take care of their family as well as what to do during a flood.

child return it early next week.

November 19 from 1:15--3:15pm is our free library visit.
Parent volunteers please meet in your child’s classroom at 1pm.

  • Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our
SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a
“Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy.  Once a student has
eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item
will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling.
In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a
locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc.
The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for
composting at home and then should be added back into the
lunch kit for the next day.  Help us make a difference!

Thanksgiving

October 10, 2019

Dear Grade 3C Families,

We have been inspired by the Group of Seven artists
To create lovely pastel art work of scenery and animals.
Our 5 senses writing describes our art piece.

In Health, we have discussed the Quality of Life and what that means
to each individual which led well into our time with Ryan Willart our Indigenous guide
who presented us with teachings of his people as well as customs and traditions.
He played the drum and we charged like buffalo! We talked about what
we are thankful for and what makes us happy.

We have started a Wonder box in class that children may use to write
questions that they may have about animals, space, and other places to put in this box,
then we try to find answers for their wonderment.
Did you know that an ostrich can out run a very fast professional sprinter?

Our city planners were in today and we learned so much about what is needed
to build a vibrant Calgary community. They showed us pictures of Calgary long
ago and how it has changed. We discussed the services required in a community
and then designed our own ideal communities in groups.

We will be planning a miniature community project in groups. Please send items for building
such as small boxes, paper towel rolls, little drink bottle lids, felt, small twigs, and anything else
you may have. Ask your child what they feel they need, as they will be creating a group plan before
building. This will begin on Wednesday October 16.

*We are going to have the Simons Valley School Remembrance Day Assembly
on Friday, November 8th from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
Also, grade 6 will be putting together a slide show of family members of any
SVS students or staff that have served in the armed services.  Please send any pictures/ information
to Mrs. Reeve at lareeve@cbe.ab.ca.

October 4, 2019

Dear Grade 3C Families,

We have continued to share Indigenous legends and their teachings
of respect as we discuss friendships in our sharing circles.
We are learning about our community, our province, and our country
in social studies class. City planners are visiting on October 10th to
demonstrate how they plan Calgary communities and what services are
required.

In Math we are looking at 2 and 3 digit numbers and place value as we
compare numbers.

We will be discussing how we all belong to great families. The students will be
filling in a web asking them about the languages they speak at home, what
they eat if they have a special holiday (like Christmas or Eid) that they celebrate,
places they have visited, if they follow a religion, and the fun things they do
with their families. Please have a conversation around these questions
for next week. Everything we are preparing for will lead us to learn about India,
Tunisia, Ukraine, and Peru in the upcoming months.

*If you are interested in having a family photo taken then the :
“Family Plan Online Discount Code” for the student photos the code is

Simons Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen
Willert will be working with the staff and students in the role of Artist in
Residence starting this upcoming week. Ryan is a full-time artist and
storyteller born and raised in Southern Alberta. Although he was brought
up in a non-native community, he has since reconnected with his Blackfoot
roots
(Siksika Nation). Ryan learned the art of black ink drawing from his father
Richard (Dicky) Stimson, another well-known Siksika Nation artist. Among
the many exhibitions where he has presented his work are the City of
Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Ryan will be sharing the
Buffalo teachings with our staff and students and in turn creating a
mural in our multipurpose area. Smudging of sweetgrass will be present
as the artist works with the children.
Please come hear him speak at the
Parent Council meeting Thursday October 10th at 7pm.

Our second attempt at building a bridge was a success after planning a blueprint for a design. The children worked in teams and used their time effectively.
